The three rules that surprise every beginner

1. The serve is underhand

You serve diagonally from behind the baseline with an underhand motion, and you get one try. A serve that clips the net and lands in the right box is in play. Serving rules.

2. Two bounces before anyone volleys

The serve must bounce, and the return must bounce. Only then may players hit the ball out of the air. All the beginner rules.

3. No volleys from the kitchen

The 7 foot zone next to the net is the non-volley zone. You can stand in it, but you cannot volley while touching it or its line. Kitchen rules.

Ready to go beyond the rules?

Once the rules feel natural, most points in doubles are won or lost on decisions: when to dink, when to attack, who takes the middle ball. Our own course, The Pickleball Command System, is a visual PDF system for recreational doubles players at roughly the 2.5 to 3.5 level, built around three reads in a fixed order: ball, body, space. It is a one time payment of $49 with a 30-day money-back guarantee (as listed on the course page on October 10, 2026).

Pickleball Command is made and sold by Costa Launch LLC, the company behind this site. It is educational and does not promise a rating, ranking or match result. Brand new players will get more from it after a few weeks of play.

What you need to start
